Parent Involvement
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement through the season is mandatory. Running swim meets is not possible without having many parent volunteers at each meet including 16 timers, a lead timer, a runner, 2 console operators, and a team to set up and tear down at teach meet. Without these volunteers, either A) the meet will not happen, or B) We have to run the meet with a decreased number of lanes which extends the time that the meet takes considerably.
Each family is required to complete 4 volunteer shifts per season. Families not fulfilling their volunteer obligation will be assessed a $50 fee at the season's end.
Volunteer Positions at each meet:
Lead Timer - Your job is to start two stop watches at the beginning of each heat in case one of the lane timers' watches fails. You are to watch the lane timers during the heat and if they raise their hand, you are to quickly get one of the already started backup stopwatches to them and take their failed stopwatch from them.
Lane Timer - The timer uses both a stop watch and a button (plunger) to track a swimmer's time on the chance that the touchpad system fails (which can happen more often than you think!) There are 2 timers assigned to each lane.
Timer Procedures
Runner - The runner's job is to collect the timer sheets at the end of each heat or event, and take them to the swim console table (the table where they are running the computer for the meet). You may also collect disqualification sheets from the officials and take them to the swim console table as well.
Runner Procedures
Console Operator - Operate the computerized timing console to ensure the correct event and heat is being timed. Save times at the end of each heat, and progress the timing system to the next heat or event. Notify the starting official if you are not ready to begin the heat (i.e. if the proper heat isn't loaded onto the computer, etc.).
Console Operator Procedures
Setup / Tear Down - All hands on deck are required for set up and tear down. Show up before the meet to set up the timing system including plugging in touchpads, timing plungers, cables from the wall to the timing console, etc. To tear down, you will dry and put away the timing system components. Note that setup / tear down does not count toward the 4 volunteering assignments required throughout the season.
